Our goats are primarily kept as pets. They are handled in a manner that is almost regal. because no one was playing with them when the kids went off to college.  There is a scramble to board the trailer as soon as we bring it up to the gate because goats love attention! They enjoy going. One is free to stay home if they don't feel like going out. The socialization of the newborns assures us of having highly sociable children when they return to their new farms.
Because they are low on the food chain and are preyed upon, goats are born to be highly cautious towards people. Many "breeders" are merely people who keep goats in a pasture with a buck and sell the offspring as soon as they are born without introducing them to other goats. Our breeding program prioritizes the mother's wellbeing first. We check to see whether either selenium or vitamin E deficiency exists in our women.
